Here are the steps you need to take to reach a real person on the phone at the Social Security Administration.

  1. Before you call, make sure you have all of the information that you need.
     - Social Security cards and birth dates for those who you are calling about.
     - Any letters or notices the SSA sent you
  2. The SSA telephone number is 1-800-772-1213, as of March 31st, 2020 they are available from 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday. The best time to call is early in the morning.
  3. The first question the automated system will ask you is to choose your language.
  4. Once you’ve set your language, you will be directed to the main menu.
  5. A prompt will ask you what your inquiry is about. Say “Speak to a Representative”.
  6. The prompt will say “You’d like to speak to someone, right?” Say “Yes”.
  7. A new prompt will notify you of the SSA privacy act. Once you’ve listed to the prompt, say “Continue”.
  8. The final prompt will ask you for your Social Security Number (SSN). Once you have entered your SSN, you will be directed to a representative. If they are busy, a new prompt will give you the option to wait for a representative to answer or leave a call back number.

Access Your SSA Account Online

Many of the SSA services are available online. To access information about your account, go to https://www.ssa.gov/. Once you have created an account you will be able to view information from your Social Security record, including earnings history and estimates of your retirement, disability and survivors benefits. They also have a message portal where you are able to view copies of any notices sent to you.

Why people call the Social Security Administration

The SSA handles retirement benefits, Social Security disability, Medicare enrollment, and Social Security Number issues. The most common reasons people call:

  • Apply for or update benefits — retirement, SSDI, SSI, or survivors’ benefits. The first application can be started online but often requires a follow-up phone call to verify documents.
  • Replace a lost Social Security card. Most states allow this online now via my Social Security, but some require a phone call or in-person visit.
  • Report a name change after marriage, divorce, or legal name change. Required to update Social Security records before filing taxes with the new name.
  • Direct deposit or address changes for benefit payments.
  • Resolve a benefit overpayment notice or appeal a benefit decision.
  • Medicare Part B enrollment — required at age 65 even if you continue working.
  • Suspected identity theft or Social Security fraud.

SSA phone lines get extremely busy. From client experience:

  • Best: Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. local time
  • Avoid: Mondays (highest call volume of the week), the first 3 business days of each month (when benefits are paid), and any tax-filing deadline week
  • Hours: 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, local time (closed federal holidays)

Many SSA tasks can be done online without ever calling, usually faster than the phone:

FAQs about reaching a real person at the SSA

How long does it take to get through to a real person at the SSA?

Average wait times in 2026 range from 30 minutes to over 90 minutes. Calling first thing in the morning (8 a.m.) or after lunch (1-2 p.m.) generally produces shorter waits. The SSA offers a callback feature once you’re in the queue — leave your number and an agent will call back, usually within 2-4 hours.

Can someone else call the SSA on my behalf?

Generally no — the SSA will only discuss your account with you, an appointed representative (with Form SSA-1696 on file), or someone with a power of attorney for federal benefits. Even spouses cannot get account-specific information without these authorizations.

Does the SSA call you?

Almost never. If you receive a call claiming to be the SSA, it’s almost certainly a scam. The SSA contacts you primarily by mail. If the SSA does call you (rare), they will not threaten arrest, demand immediate payment, or ask for personal info you haven’t already provided. Real SSA agents never demand payment by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency.

How do I prove my identity over the phone to the SSA?

SSA phone agents ask for your full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, current address, and one or two prior addresses or employers. Have these details ready before calling. For benefit changes, the agent may need to send a confirmation letter to your address on file.
